PRESIDENT NIXON AND THE VIETNAM WAR
With regard to Vietnam, president Richard wanted to achieve "Peace With Honor." His aim is to negotiate a settlement that will allow the half million U.S. troops in Vietnam to be withdrawn, while still allowing South Vietnam to survive.
In 1973, Nixon went to Paris to discuss the withdrawal of U.S forces from Vietnam. In what became known as the Paris Peace Accord, Nixon wanted a withdrawal of troops in which the U.S retained respect - which was hard considering the U.S was losing the war. Nixon wanted 'Peace with Honour' in which he would withdraw all U.S forces from Vietnam within 60 days and that the North Vietnamese would hand over all U.S prisoners of war.

Nixon had made a pledge in 1968 to make an honourable end to the war. But of course the prestige of the U.S as a superpower was on the line. And the U.S had to withdraw from Vietnam - and be able to keep its status as a superpower.
To do this, Nixon went to China - the first ever visit of a U.S President to the Communist nation. The idea of going to China was to drive a wedge between the Soviet Union and China. With closer relations with China, the U.S could use this new friendship to enlist Chinese help to keep the Vietnamese communists under control - and prevent Soviet sphere of influence in Asia.
